How to Re-Fill HP Printer Ink Cartridge
The HP 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, and 65 cartridges are integrated cartridges, meaning the printheads and the cartridges are housed in the same piece. After changing a cartridge, we also change the printhead. Because of this, the printer only functions as a mechanical paper supplier, and every time we replace a cartridge, we get a new printhead. Please view this video about integrated cartridges if you are new to refills. You will be more knowledgeable on how replenishment functions and how to handle various scenarios.
There are a Few Necessary Things to Know Before we Start the Re-fill Process:
The printer will provide a "Used or Counterfeit Cartridge Detected" warning. Clicking "Yes" will allow us to ignore the warning and allow the printer to continue operating.
The difference between "not working" and "clogging" is that if the printer is printing but the printout is blank, the cartridge is clogged. This is distinct from a malfunctioning printer, which cannot produce any printed pages. We'll use the terms "not printing" and "clogged" to describe it. Thus, when we say "the printer is not working properly," it will be quite unclear.
After a refill, the printer won't reset the ink level, which causes the ink level to be marked with an exclamation point. The ink level won't matter; we'll just keep printing..
Detailed Procedures
Make sure the cartridges are in working condition.
The cartridge will be inserted into the printer once we check it for any electronic issues. When the yellow warning light starts to blink, we remove the cartridge and clean the electronic ribbon. If, after several attempts, the hazard light is still blinking, we will throw away the cartridge and buy a new one.
Optional:
We will utilize a smartphone's camera to enlarge and inspect a dry cartridge's printhead. If there are no physical blemishes or scratches, we will place the cartridge in warm water and soak it for a couple of hours. We will use BCH cleaning solution to soften the clog if the dried ink is particularly tough.
Check color sequence
Locate the refill holes by running a toothpick or needle over the manufacturer's label across the top of the cartridge. Carefully puncture the label once you've located the refill holes (see diagram below). Since it is much simpler to refill, attempt to locate the holes WITHOUT REMOVING the manufacturer's label.
There are five holes in the black cartridge. For the filling, we'll use the middle hole. Moreover, the color cartridge contains five holes. The first hole from the top is one color, followed by the two holes on the left and the two holes on the right. Because HP produces two variations of the 61 cartridges with the magenta and yellow chambers flipped, we have not displayed the color scheme here. Hence, before refilling, check the color order. You won't need to drill a hole because HP's air hole is large enough for the needle to fit through.
Decide how much ink to add
The syringe should be equipped with a needle and filled with the appropriate ink color. The standard cartridges cannot be made "XL" by being overfilled. They are set up differently inside.
Let's examine the cartridge's interior. Large sponges will fill the whole space of the XL cartridges. However, HP constructs this little wall and makes use of a smaller cartridge for non-XL or startup cartridges. The size of the sponge will thereby reduce the amount of ink required.
To release a tiny amount of ink, we will insert a needle through the hole, puncture the sponge, and then draw the needle out slightly. We'll proceed cautiously and make an effort not to pierce the sponge's filter.
Instead of covering the entire sponge in ink, our purpose is to moisten it. If the sponge is unable to contain the ink, the extra ink will leak from the printhead.
Insert needle into the correct refill hole.
You should feel the resistance of the sponge through the needle.
Press down on the sponge and start injecting ink.
SLOWLY inject the ink into the cartridge.
Stop if the ink begins to well up in the fill hole.
Clean off the top of the cartridge.
Place a piece of Scotch transparent tape on the hole (optional). If we cover the hole completely, we will use a pin to punch a little opening for the cartridge to breathe.
Reinstall the printer and run one or two cleaning cycles until the cartridge begins to print correctly.
Do not exceed three cleaning cycles.
If the cartridge is not printing correctly, the refill process may introduce air bubbles into the bottom of the cartridge.
The bubbles will disappear if you let the cartridge sit in the printer for an entire night. We can use tools to suction the air bubbles or dried ink out if the obstruction continues. Keep in mind that in order to soften dried ink, we must soak it in water or a cleaning solution.
There are two techniques to remove the clog using suction. With the first technique, we'll wrap a damp paper towel around the cartridge and then suction it from beneath with a vacuum cleaner. Continue doing this until you can see colors streaming out of the printhead.
The printer may indicate "low ink" or "ink depleted."
You can hit "OK" or "Yes" to dismiss those warnings and keep printing. The printer will not track the ink level after the refill. Keep an eye on the print quality. Refill as needed.
Further troubleshooting
Take out the cartridge if the warning "cartridge cannot be found" or "cartridge must be replaced" appears. Alternatively, the blinking cartridge indicator light. Reinstall the cartridge after cleaning the contact ribbon. If the issue persists, the cartridge needs to be changed since it is damaged.
We will put our refilled cartridge to the test in order to determine how many pages it can print. The printer still believes there is no ink in the color cartridge after it has been inserted, and there is little ink left in the black cartridge. As an added bonus, if the alignment sheet is printed incorrectly, we may still use the printer by pushing the scan button and allowing it to scan a blank page. We shall begin printing with our refilled cartridge as soon as the printer is ready. The recharged cartridge has a page yield of roughly 100. The cartridge should print more pages if we use an XL refill. We have a blog where we explain how to upgrade and change the standard cartridge.
